Eating Habits
Breakfast
The Spanish don't make much of breakfast, often just choosing to have a glass of chocolate milk then eating something for elevenses or maybe some tapas around 12.00.  Saturday is a good day for a late breakfast of churros .

Lunch
Lunch is the big meal of the day, with practically everyone taking a 2-hour lunch break from 2 pm.  The Spanish may start with vegetables or a rice dish and then have a fish or piece of meat as 2nd course.   They don't usually combine meat/fish and veg on one plate.  (Some restaurants advertise Platos Combinados, literally 'combined dishes' for tourists like us who expect a few veg with their meal.) Paella is a traditional Sunday lunch dish - see extended Spanish families out in restaurants for Sunday lunch.

Dinner
After that hefty lunch, dinner is a lighter affair eaten late around 9 pm - in the summer maybe 10 pm or later.

Dining with Spanish Friends

If you get asked to dine with Spanish friends it's most likely to be their treat in a restaurant.  If you do get invited to their house for some real Spanish food, you'll probably be expected to help yourself to wine - remember there's not much difference in price to the bottled water that you feel OK helping yourself to.  Out of courtesy, you should say 'May I?' (Puedo?), beforehand.

It's customary to take the pud .. but you can take wine as well.  I like the Spanish custom of drinking champagne with the pud.

Oh, it's considered bad form not to have your hands on show at all times at the table - bit like 'elbows on the table' here, I suppose.
